Hygiene 101: How to Sanitize Your Makeup Kit

In the professional world, a dirty kit is a reputation killer. Worse, it can cause infections. Here are the golden rules of makeup sanitation.

1. No Double Dipping

Never dip a used wand back into a tube (mascara, lip gloss, concealer). Use a disposable wand, dip once, apply, and throw it away. Or, put product on a palette first.

2. Sanitizing Powders

Spray the surface of pressed powders (eyeshadows, blushes) with 70% Isopropyl Alcohol. Let it dry completely. This kills bacteria without destroying the product.

3. Cleaning Cream Products

Wipe the top layer off with a tissue, then spritz with alcohol. Better yet, scoop out a small amount onto a palette with a spatula.

4. Deep Cleaning Brushes

Spot clean with brush cleaner between clients. Deep clean with soap and water at the end of every day. Dry them upside down or flat to protect the glue in the ferrule.

5. Hand Hygiene

Sanitize your hands before touching a client's face. Keep nails short and clean.
